Resumen
In Stoic philosophy the only Good, the summum bonum, is virtue. 1 But there are other assets that have a conventional 2 value such like health, wealth, friendship, love... and political power. 3 The stoic founder, Zeno, said the sage must always embrace political power because he/she would lead correctly. 4 All the “conventional goods” are indifferent for achieving happiness; the human being only has to act virtuously in order to be happy. 5 This argument especially applies to people wielding power. The powerful has to be just, moderate, wise and brave, in all his/her acts, that is, he has to practice the four virtues recognized in stoicism. 6 The powerful must reject the conventional goods if receiving them implies an act against the virtue. In order to rule virtuously, the individual wielding political power also has to have in mind that all human beings are equally valuable because all we were created with equal rationality by the Nature (God). If the powerful has in mind that all human beings must be respected and treated equally and justly then he/she is not going to give preference to his/her family, friends or countrymen, over the fulfillment of virtue. All this and more, for Stoicism, allows to prevent further conflicts and wars with other cities, states or societies. Revisiting the moral theory of stoicism could shed light in political Power issues of present day, as we will discuss the following questions: The (politically) powerful countries must use its capabilities in order to protect the whole world population or to protect just their own citizens? Must political issues have priority over the personal life to politicians and powerful people? According to Stoics the whole World is a Cosmic city, 7 but, this idea could help anyone in being more tolerable with immigrants, in reducing racism or in eliminating the world frontiers? 8 Could help Mexico?
