La muerte ha sido siempre tema de interés en todas las culturas y cuenta con variadas significaciones y rituales a su alrededor. No obstante, hay una tendencia creciente a su ocultamiento, desritualización y medicalización. Proponemos algunas preguntas iniciales para pensar, en clave bioética, la cuestión de la muerte en la formación de profesionales de la salud. Cabe preguntarse, entonces, sobre los efectos que esta tendencia histórico-cultural tiene en la formación. ¿Cómo se posicionará un/a profesional que no ha sido formado en visibilizar la muerte y sus múltiples sentidos, en relación a quienes padecen en torno a la muerte? ¿Cómo puede pronunciar y/o acompañar el proceso de morir?, y cómo hacerlo de tal manera que respete la autonomía y la dignidad de las personas. ¿Cómo dar lugar a los cuidados paliativos cuando son necesarios, no solo como un derecho sino también como cuidado ético del otro en protección de su vulnerabilidad? Sostenemos que la educación bioética para la muerte ofrece la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre lo que es una buena muerte - una que sea consciente, preparada, acompañada, significativa- y de pensar(se) en un ejercicio profesional que resguarde en ese proceso los derechos y los principios éticos que los sostienen. SOME INITIAL QUESTIONS Death has always been a topic of interest in all cultures, and it involves several meanings and rituals around it. However, there is a growing tendency towards its concealment, lack of ritualism and medicalization. We propose some initial questions to think about the topic of death in the training of health professionals from a bioethics perspective. Therefore, it is worth asking about the effects that this historical-cultural tendency has on training: how will professionals who have not been trained in making death visible and in considering its multiple meanings, position themselves in relation to those who suffer death?; how can they pronounce and/or tend the process of dying?, and how to do it in such a way that it respects the autonomy and dignity of every person; how to “make room” for palliative care attention when necessary, not only as a right but also as an ethical care in protection of vulnerability?. We argue that bioethics education on death offers the opportunity to reflect upon what a good death is -one that is prepared, accompanied, significant-, and to think of a professional exercise that safeguards human rights in the process of dying, as well as the ethical principles underlying them.
