Resumen
SCIENTIFIC POSTER - ABSTRACT Topic: The role of daughters in Shakespeare’s plays: Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Title: “Women in Elizabethan times through Shakespeare’s eyes” Research questions: Which was the women’s role in Elizabethan era? How were women represented by the literature of the time? To which extent could women take part in their own destiny? How Shakespeare’s descriptions/presentations of female characters demonstrate his view as regards patriarchy. Purpose of the scientific poster: Study the role of daughters in Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet by taking into account how Juliet and Ophelia are not able to assert their free will and self- determination and how their parental figures and society deny their right to a free choice Empirical reference/ case: Shakespeare’s plays Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Theoretical framework: Socio-historical context: E. M. W Tylliard, Feminist theories: Sharon Hamilton and Theresa Kemp. Methodological strategies: Comparative literature, based on the formulation of objectives and hypothesis, as well as its following verification. Main results or proposed discussion: -The misogynist and patriarchal society of the Elizabethan era does not allow women to choose and to make their own decisions. In Juliet’s case, although she challenges her father and the society of the times, the tragic ending of the play has its start point in the fact that she does not fulfill his father’s will, whereas in the case of Ophelia, her amenable personality prevents her from questioning the male figures’ ordinances and commands which led her also towards a dreadful final.
