Este trabajo es un recorte de un tema de investigación más amplio- con sede en la Cátedra II de la asignatura Historia de la Psicología, UBA- que indaga las nociones sobre lo psíquico y su abordaje desde el período colonial hasta 1852. Esta delimitación temporal coincide con acontecimientos políticos y sociales que otorgan un marco a la concepción de enajenación mental, las categorías utilizadas para su diagnóstico y las herramientas conceptuales para su abordaje y tratamiento. En esta oportunidad, haremos foco en el texto del Padre Montenegro; un autor que, proviniendo de la España del siglo XVIII y siendo jesuita, asume características conceptuales de la medicina hipocrático-galénica proponiendo una terapéutica basada en el uso farmacológico de las plantas (herboristerapia). Nos estamos refiriendo a su texto “Materia médica misionera” escrito en 1711 en el cual menciona la forma de tratar la melancolía, la manía y la hipocondría, entre otras enfermedades mentales, a partir del uso de plantas medicinales. This work consists in a brief version of a more extensive research topic - established in the 2nd chair of the subject History of Psychology, UBA - which investigates the notions about what is considered as psychical and its approach since the colonial period up to 1852. This temporal delimitation coincides with political and social events which gives a frame to the concept of mental derangement, the categories used to determine its diagnostic and the conceptual tools for its approach and treatment. In this opportunity, we are going to focus in the text of Padre Montenegro; an author that, coming from the Spain of XVIII century and being Jesuit, assumes conceptual characteristics from de Hippocratic-galenic´s medicine proposing a therapeutics based on the pharmacological use of plants (herbotheraphy). We are referring to his text “Missionary Medical Matter” wrote in 1711 in which he mentions the way of treating melancholia, mania and hypochondria, among other mental disorders, with the use of medicinal plants.
