La mala alimentación y el estado nutricional pobre son factores de riesgo para la morbilidad y la mortalidad infantil, sobre todo en contextos empobrecidos. Éstos afectan no sólo el crecimiento físico sino también el cerebral, pudiendo alterar el desarrollo de ciertas habilidades cognitivas. Con el propósito de describir relaciones entre las habilidades cognitivas y el estado nutricional de niños de 4 años de S. M. de Tucumán en situación de pobreza, se aplicó la Batería de Evaluación de Kaufman para niños (K- ABC). Se analizaron descriptivamente las puntuaciones en los tests cognitivos correspondientes a las Escalas del Procesamiento Simultáneo y Secuencial. Posteriormente se establecieron relaciones estadísticas entre las pruebas y el peso y talla actual, indicadores del estado nutricional. Se observaron diferencias estadísticas en las pruebas ligadas al procesamiento simultáneo, específicamente Triángulos. Las relaciones estadísticas encontradas mostraron las dificultades en las habilidades espaciales, de organización perceptiva, coordinación visomotora y formación de conceptos no verbales, sobre todo en aquellos niños con un déficit en su peso y talla actual. El diagnóstico de estas habilidades en niños preescolares permitiría la detección temprana de fortalezas y debilidades cognitivas al momento del ingreso al nivel inicial para su posterior intervención. A STUDY WITH CHILDREN OF IMPOVERISHED CONTEXTS The bad feeding and the poor nutritional state are factors of risk for the morbidity and infantile mortality, in contexts mainly impoverished. These also affect not only the physical but the cerebral one growth, being able to alter the development of certain cognitive skills. In order to describe to relations between the cognitive abilities and the nutritional state of children of 4 years of S. M. of Tucumán in poverty situation, the Battery of Evaluation of Kaufman for children was applied (K- ABC). The scores in cognitive tests were analyzed descriptively corresponding to the Scales of the Simultaneous and Sequential Processing. Later the tests and the weight settled down statistical relations between and carves present, indicating of the nutritional state. Statistical differences in the tests related to the simultaneous processing were observed, specifically Triangles. The found statistical relations showed the difficulties in the space abilities, of perceptive organization, visomotora coordination and formation of nonverbal concepts, mainly in those children with a deficit in their weight and carves present. The diagnosis of these skills in pre-school children would allow the early detection of fortresses and cognitive weaknesses to the moment of the revenue to the initial level for its later intervention.
