Freud en el texto “el motivo de la elección del cofre” se pregunta por el estatuto del deseo a partir del análisis de dos obras de Shakespeare:”el mercader de venecia” y “el rey lear”. En ambas obras la alternativa de elección es entre tres, y la opción recae sobre la tercera. Se interrogará cual es el motivo de esa elección. la pregunta es sobre la satisfacción en relación al deseo, es sorprendente que freud hable de la satisfacción en estos terminos, cuando es una pregunta por la meta de la pulsion. En el análisis del mercader de venecia, es un rey que entrega la mano de su hija a quien elija correctamente entre tres cofres.en el texto el rey lear , la alternativa de elección es entre tres hijas, por el amor que le profesan al anciano padre. Freud plantea el error de esta elección en función del amor. Se trabajará el estatuto del deseo inconciente. Es una elección que está determinada por lo que lacan llama factor letal.
