Ningún relato, dice el autor, es narrado desde la inocencia o la ingenuidad.Toda perspectiva responde a intenciones y objetivos. Bruner examina los usos de la narrativa y propone dos objetivos para el relato: se puede narrar con fines de control o bien para lograr la comprensión. A través del relato construimos, reconstruimos, reinventamos nuestro pasado y nuestro futuro para ser entendidos, pero también para ser aceptados. La autobiografía constituye una herramienta especial para este fin. Si la narrativa es normativa, cabe preguntarse entonces si el sujeto no podría estructurarse en torno a otras formas interpretativas.
