Desde épocas remotas las manifestaciones sintomáticas de la histeria han logrado llamar la atención. Diferentes autores han hecho mención ofreciendo diferentes puntos de vista sobre su manifestación. Desde el psicoanálisis freudiano en adelante, el mecanismo de la identificación ocupo un papel fundamental en la conceptualización de los mecanismos de producción de sus síntomas. Este trabajo tiene la intención de aproximarse a cómo el concepto de identificación posibilita y promueve a que dicha modalidad subjetiva se manifieste y se estructure en la singularidad que la caracteriza. Partiendo de allí, se considera que los síntomas de la época presentan características con un semblante común, de acuerdo a los significantes que comandan en un tiempo y contexto determinado, lo cual es eficazmente logrado por el mecanismo de identificación. La histeria, la cual tiene una manifestación sintomática singular se ve atravesada no solo por la realidad social frente a la cual debe responder, sino también por la identificación. Por esto, la identificación es un concepto fundamental que atraviesa no solo al sujeto en su singularidad sino a las masas y a la sociedad, tomando a la histeria como estructura discursiva donde se hace manifiesta.
