Freud se ocupó de sistematizar en el contexto de sus teorizaciones sobre las neurosis de angustia, los distintos elementos que asociados entre si o de manera aislada caracterizan al ataque de angustia. Esta descripción se remonta a los primeros textos freudianos pero será en rigor la última versión sobre la teoría de la angustia la que aporte los fundamentos metapsicológicos que permiten abordar teórica y clínicamente esta dimensión de la angustia. La irrupción pulsional sin ligadura testimonia el fracaso de la angustia en su función de señal. El más allá del principio del placer y su relación con el encuentro con lo que vale como traumático, en tanto fracaso de la ligadura con el campo de las representaciones, se trate de la sexualidad o de la muerte, resulta el hilo conductor que permite recortar la lógica en juego. Desde esta perspectiva abordaremos la crisis de angustia a partir de interrogar dos cuestiones: I ¿Por qué la muerte? y II: La relación entre la angustia y la operación separación.
