Diversos estudios han mostrado la importancia que los vínculos tanto familiares como no familiares que brindan algún tipo de apoyo tienen en el bienestar integral durante la vejez. Entre ellos, las relaciones de amistad han sido identificadas entre los vínculos centrales que conforman la red en esta etapa de la vida. Los objetivos de este trabajo consisten en: 1) explorar la inclusión de vínculos de amistad dentro de las redes de apoyo de personas mayores de 60 a 90 años de edad, 2) identificar las funciones de apoyo que cumplen y 3) caracterizar los atributos de dicho vínculo en lo referido a: multidimensionalidad, intimidad y frecuencia de contacto. Se implementó un diseño de tipo no experimental descriptivo. A una muestra seleccionada intencionalmente de 140 casos se le administró la Entrevista Estructurada de fuentes de apoyo social. Los datos relevados fueron analizados de manera cuantitativa. Los resultados muestran la importancia de la relación de amistad en la vejez, tanto por la elevada frecuencia en que este tipo de vínculo es incluido en las redes de las personas mayores como por brindar compañía social y su elevada intimidad. SUPPORT FUNCTIONS AND ATTRIBUTES Studies have shown the importance of both, family and non-family social support network members, on wellbeing in the elderly. Among them, the friendship relations have been identified among the main social network links at this stage of life. The objectives of this work are: 1) to explore the inclusion of friendship relations within the support networks of people aged 60 to 90, 2) to identify their support functions and 3) to characterize the attributes of that links regarding to: multidimensionality, intimacy and frequency of contact. A non-experimental and descriptive research is implemented. The Structured Interview of social support resources was administered to an intentional sample of 140 cases. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively. The results show the importance of friendship in the elderly for their frequent inclusion in the social support network and for the social contact and intimacy that they provide.
