Este trabajo presenta resultados de una investigación cuyo objetivo es la evaluación de la Calidad de Muerte percibida por paciente y familiar y la presentación de instrumentos de evaluación psicológica adaptados para analizar dentro del área de los cuidados paliativos. La calidad de muerte se conceptualiza como una muerte libre de angustia y sufrimiento evitable para los pacientes y sus familiares, de acuerdo a sus deseos, y razonablemente coherentes con los standards clínicos, culturales y éticos. (Institute of Medicine,1997). La investigación se realiza dentro del contexto de los cuidados paliativos definido como un “abordaje destinado a mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes y sus familiares, que afrontan problemas asociados a una enfermedad amenazadora para la vida, a través de la prevención y paliación del sufrimiento, por medio de la identificación precoz, y la evaluación y tratamiento cuidadosos de todas las problemáticas que afectan al enfermo, sean éstas de tipo somático, emocional, ético, social o espiritual”. Las investigaciones sobre calidad del proceso de morir y de muerte tienen como objetivo evaluar cualitativa y cuantitativamente las variables que influyen en cómo mueren las personas en una institución de salud o en domicilio, en una ciudad o nación. Palabras clave Calidad de muerte, Cuidados paliativos, Evaluación ABSTRACT QUALITY OF DYING AND DEATH IN PALLIATIVE CARES Quality of death was defined by the Institute of Medicine as a death that is “free from avoidable distress and suffering for patients and their families, in accord with the patients’ and families’ wishes, and reasonably consistent with clinical, cultural, and ethical standards”. The evaluation of the quality of dying and death( QODD) and QL is done within the treatment of patients in palliative cares, defined by OMS(2004) as an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with lifethreatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.The evaluation will bring us to the knowledge of the quality of interventions we use supporting dying patients and their families, boosting the resources to obtain the best quality of death expecting all human brings die in peace. Researches on the quality of dying and death go beyond that and aim to make a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the variables that affect how persons die at a health institution or at their domicile, as well as the variables of a city or a nation.
