El término melancolía deriva del griego y se traduce como humor negro. Referido desde su origen tanto a lo fisiológico como a su vertiente psicológica, su uso se inclinó paulatinamente hacia lo anímico aludiendo a un ánimo triste. Su ubicación nos conduce a las estructuras discursivas del contexto lacaniano, que muestran posiciones subjetivas del ser y evitan los rótulos clasificatorios inexorables con conteos taxativos de condiciones. Es en el Seminario Problemas cruciales para el psicoanálisis donde Lacan plantea dichas posiciones desde las cuales nos interrogamos por el sujeto, el objeto y el mecanismo de identificación en la melancolía. Los afectados sostienen un texto monocorde quejumbroso y reclamante que no encierra ninguna pregunta ni juega como retorno de lo reprimido sino como retorno de lo mismo, lo idéntico a sí mismo. Este enunciado no se presta a la interpretación metafórica sino que es tomado para el trabajo de construcción en el análisis. Esa posibilidad de intervención pone algún límite al sufrimiento infinito que aúlla desde las entrañas melancólicas. Lacan asegura que no hay quien muestre de modo más dramático el dolor de existir como lo hace el melancólico.
