El trabajo se centra en el estudio de la existencia y propiedades de un intérprete mental, entendido como construcción teórica referida a un mecanismo funcional que operaría posibilitando la traducción del pensamiento al lenguaje. La hipótesis del intérprete mental surge en el marco del análisis de determinación de posibilidad teórica de los denominados sistemas de lectura artificial del pensamiento, programa de investigación en neurociencia cognitiva orientado a traducir contenidos de estados mentales en formatos representacionales inteligibles a través de la decodificación de sus señales neurales subyacentes. La fundamentación de la hipótesis del intérprete mental incluye tanto el análisis teórico como referencias de carácter fenomenológico que le confieren verosimilitud. En lo concerniente al análisis teórico, se remite a la tesis de Vigostky sobre pensamiento y lenguaje, y a la tesis de Fodor acerca de un lenguaje del pensamiento, de carácter abstracto y representacional. En relación al plano fenomenológico, se repasan algunos aspectos de la técnica de monólogo interior formulada por el escritor James Joyce en su obra Ulises. Palabras clave Interprete mental, Sistemas de lectura artificial del pensamiento, Pensamiento y lenguaje ABSTRACT FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS OF A MENTAL INTERPRETER: A THEORETICAL CONSTRUCT IN THE CONTEXT OF ARTIFICIAL SYSTEMS OF THOUGHT READING The project focuses on the existence and features of a mental interpreter, as a theoretical construction referred to a functional mechanism that would enable the translation from thought to language. The mental interpreter’s hypothesis arises in the context of what is called Artificial Systems of Thought Reading, a research programme in Cognitive Neuroscience which aims to determine the content of mental states through decoding associated neural signals. The base of the thesis concerning the mental interpreter will include not only the theoretical analysis but also the survey of phenomenological references that would confer verisimilitude. In regard to theoretical analysis, the notion of the mental interpreter goes back to Vygotsky’s thesis about thought and language, and what is more, to Fodor’s thesis, which is about an abstract and representational language of thought. In regard to the phenomenological level, some aspects of the technique of interior monologue made by the writer James Joyce in his book Ulysses will be examined.
