En este estudio, de naturaleza correlacional y de diferencia de grupos, se planteó como objetivo general conocer las relaciones entre las fortalezas y virtudes del carácter y los cinco grandes rasgos de personalidad. Se describen también las diferencias según género. La muestra estuvo conformada por 45 adultos, que recibían tratamiento ambulatorio en un Hospital Público, con edades comprendidas entre 22 y 76 años (M=47,02; DE=14,25), en donde 34 de estos pacientes fueron mujeres (75,6%) y 11 fueron hombres (24,4%). Las variables se evaluaron con escalas adaptadas en la Argentina: el Inventario de Virtudes y Fortalezas Abreviado y el Big Five Inventory. Los resultados muestran que el neuroticismo es el rasgo que más correlaciona en sentido inverso con la mayoría de las fortalezas del carácter. Por el contrario, los rasgos extroversión, agradabilidad, responsabilidad y apertura a la experiencia se asocian positivamente a dichas fortalezas. En cuanto a las diferencias según género, los resultados muestran que las mujeres presentan niveles más elevados de las fortalezas amabilidad, perspectiva y clemencia. Palabras clave Fortalezas del carácter, Personalidad, Género, Tratamiento ambu- latorio ABSTRACT CHARACTER STRENGTHS AND VIRTUES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH PERSONALITY IN EXTERNAL PATIENTS In this correlational study, as a general objective, it was proposed to know the relationship between character strengths and virtues and the Big Five personality traits. This investigation also analyzes the differences by gender. The sample was formed by 45 external patients that were treated in a public hospital, with ages between 22 and 76 years old (M=47.02, SD=14.25). From the total of patients, 34 were women (75.6%) and 11 were men (24.4%). The variables were assessed with scales adapted in Argentina:The Short Inventory of Virtues and Strengths and The Big Five Inventory.The results show that neuroticism is the trait that more negative correlation has with most of the character strengths. On the other hand, extraversion, agreeableness, concientiousness and openness to experience were positively associated with many strengths. In the results of the analysis of the gender differences, women had higher levels of the following strengths: kindness forgiveness and perspective.
