El caso E. West constituye el primer ejemplo de aplicación del análisis existencial propuesto por L. Binswanger, quien considera que las concepciones filosóficas de E. Husserl, M. Heidegger y M. Scheler brindan la base necesaria para elaborar una psiquiatría unitaria, superando la oposición psique - cuerpo de la psiquiatría tradicional organicista.Así, el enfermo mental adquiere una nueva significación, ya que es considerado como una persona que no ha logrado realizar plenamente un proyecto de vida singular en las circunstancias en que debe vivir.El estudio del caso clínico de E.West es muy detallado y toma en cuenta no sólo los antecedentes hereditarios familiares sino también elementos de su biografía, tales como cartas, poesías y su diario íntimo. Finalmente, su suicidio pone fin a su existencia (1921). Actualmente, este caso se transforma en un centro de polémica, ya que surgen críticas tanto en relación al diagnóstico como a su tratamiento terapéutica (C. Trogan 2010; G. Figueroa, 2011). El relato del caso fue publicado 23 años después (1944). De esta forma, puede considerarse que la terapia seguida no fue eficaz para el paciente, ya que no le brindó una alternativa diferente a su problemática. En este trabajo se abordarán dichas críticas. West case constitutes the first example of application of existential analysis proposed by L. Binswanger, who considers that the philosophical conceptions of E. Husserl, M. Heidegger and M. Scheler provide the base needed to develop a unitary Psychiatry, overcoming opposition psyche - body of organic traditional psychiatry. Thus, the mental patient acquires a new significance, since it is considered to be a person who has failed to fully perform a singular life project in the circumstances in which they must live. The study of West’s clinical case is very detailed and takes into account not only the hereditary family history but also elements of her biography, such as letters, poems, and his intimate diary. Finally, her suicide puts an end to her existence (1921). At present, this case is transformed into a center of controversy, since emerging therapeutic criticism both in relation to the diagnosis and treatment (C. Trogan 2010; G. Figueroa, 2011). The statement of the case was published 23 years later (1944). This way, it can be considered that followed therapy was not effective for the patient, since it did not provide an alternative to her problems.
