El presente trabajo aborda distintos aspectos de la representación social de la cognición en la vejez y los vincula a los nuevos desarrollos teóricos e investigativos en la temática. Hemos utilizado el concepto de campo representacional, espacio en el que conviven el consenso, la contradicción y la ambivalencia, aportando sus diversas significaciones en tanto expresiones de la relativa heterogeneidad que alberga un colectivo humano determinado. Aquí presentamos y discutimos los datos referidos a las creencias en torno a la capacidad intelectual y al aprendizaje las cuales forman parte del campo representacional que nos ocupa. La muestra fue de 71 participantes adultos de ambos sexos de la ciudad de Mar del Plata. El diseño fue exploratorio y transversal, y el análisis de los datos cuali-cuantitativo. Los resultados ponen en evidencia la presencia de componentes heterogéneos en su significación y, por lo que se comprueba, coexistentes, a pesar de que en algunos casos son, inclusive, antagónicos; las creencias acerca de la capacidad intelectual y de la capacidad de aprendizaje en la vejez. ITS “REPRESENTATIONAL FIELD” This paper aims to approach different aspects of the social representation of aging and to link them to the application of the new theoretical frameworks in the subject of the knowledge and the thinking in old age. We have proposed the concept “representational field”, this is the space in which the consensus, the contradiction and the ambivalence coexist, contributing their different meanings as expressions of the relative heterogeneity from certain human community. In this paper are presented and discussed the data obtained of an investigation about the beliefs concerning the intellectual ability and the learning, which form part of the “representational field” that we describe. It was used an exploratory and traversal design with a sample of 71 elderly people of both sexes from the Mar del Plata city. It was applied a qualitative methodology and it was made a quali-quantitative dataanalysis.Resultsshowedthepresenceoftheheterogeneous components in their meaning and they are coexistent, although in some cases, they are antagonistic relative to the beliefs concerning the intellectual capacity and the learning capacity in old age.
