La Organización Mundial de la Salud (2004) define los Cuidados Paliativos como: “El cuidado activo e integral de pacientes cuya enfermedad no responde a terapéuticas curativas. Su fundamento es el alivio del dolor y otros síntomas acompañantes y la consideración de los problemas psicológicos, sociales y espirituales de los mismos. El objetivo es alcanzar la máxima calidad de vida posible para el paciente y su familia. Muchos aspectos de los cuidados paliativos son también aplicables en fases previas de la enfermedad conjuntamente con tratamientos específicos, incluyendo el trabajo de duelo”. El objetivo será reflexionar y analizar las circunstancias particulares que sobrellevan los pacientes que vivencian su terminalidad a fin de encontrar las más eficaces estrategias de intervención para ayudar a que la persona encuentre una muerte digna. Asimismo se considerarán los aspectos éticos requeridos para la evaluación e intervención del psicólogo en el ámbito de los Cuidados Paliativos enmarcados en la Psicología de la Salud. Acompañar al paciente durante el proceso de enfermedad y en el último tramo de su vida, implica un desafío ético, así como la necesidad de implementar intervenciones optimizando los recursos para mejorar y obtener la mas alta calidad de vida y de muerte. Palabras clave Cuidados paliativos Intervención Ética ABSTRACT PALLIATIVE CARE: ETHICAL CHALLENGE AND INTERVENTION FOR THE PSYCHOLOGIST IN THE FIELD OF THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE HEALTH The World-wide Organization of the Health (2004) defines Palliative Care as: “The active and integral care of patients whose disease does not respond to therapeutic healing. Its foundation is the accompanying and lightening of the pain and other symptoms and the consideration of its psychological, social and spiritual problems. The objective is to reach the maximum quality of possible life for the patient and his family. Many aspects of palliative care are also applicable in previous phases of the disease jointly with specific treatments, including work of mourning”. The objective will be to reflect and to analyze the particular circumstances that patients bear; who experience their terminality in order to find the most effective strategies of intervention to help the person find a decent death. It will be also considered the ethical aspects required for the evaluation and intervention of the psychologist in the field of Palliative Care framed within the Psychology of the Health. Accompany the patient during the process of disease and in the last part of his life, implies an ethical challenge, as well as the necessity to implement interventions, optimizing the resources to improve and to obtain the highest quality of life and death.
