Si bien la desnutrición es un factor de riesgo en la infancia, se comprobó que sus consecuencias en el desarrollo resultan mas visibles en aquellas capacidades relacionadas con el aprender, comunicarse, pensar analíticamente, socializarse efectivamente y adaptarse a nuevos ambientes y personas (Cravioto, 1993; Rodrigo & Piacente, 1997). Con el propósito de describir las habilidades cognitivas y sociales de niños de nivel socioeconómico bajo de S. M. de Tucumán, se evaluaron 36 niños desnutridos y eutróficos de 4 años que concurren a control pediátrico de un Centro de Atención Primaria de la Salud de la zona sur de la ciudad. Esto constituye una submuestra de una investigación más amplia que abarca el Gran S. M. De Tucumán. Las habilidades cognitivas se evaluaron con la Batería de Evaluación de Kaufman para niños (K- ABC) y las habilidades sociales con un Inventario (diseñado para el presente estudio) aplicado a los padres y/o cuidadores. Se compararon los desempeños de ambos grupos. En el K-ABC no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en ningunas de las pruebas de la escala de procesamiento mental. Se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en algunos items del Inventario de Habilidades Sociales, sobre todo en aquellas habilidades básicas de interacción social. In order to describe the cognitive and social abilities of children of socioeconomic level under S. M. of Tucumán, 36 malnutrition and health children of 4 years evaluated themselves that concur to medical control of a Community Health Care Center (CAPS) of the south zone of the city. This constitutes a subsample of one more an investigation ampler than it includes the Great S. M. of Tucumán. The cognitive abilities evaluated with the Battery of Evaluation of Kaufman for children (K-ABC) and the social skills with an Inventory (designed for the present study) applied to the parents and/or caretakers. The performances of both groups were compared. In the K-ABC were not statistically significant differences in any of the tests of the scale of mental processing.
