A partir de la articulación de la melancolía con la segunda tópica se intentan ubicar las diferencias entre el objeto en la melancolía y el masoquismo. En la melancolía, redefinida como neurosis narcisista, el Superyó, en conflicto con el Yo, no está ni atemperado por el Ideal ni erotizado por el masoquismo: se trata del cultivo puro de la pulsión de muerte.
