Tomando los desarrollos que Lacan realiza a partir del Seminario 6, El deseo y su interpretación (Lacan, 1958-1959) y el aporte fundamental del Seminario 10, La angustia (Lacan 1962-1963 podemos ubicar respecto del duelo: un primer tiempo, la renegación fálica, segundo el tiempo de la elaboración, los ritos, el Logos, y tercero el tiempo de la sustitución, el suplemento. Pero esos tiempos no siempre son llevados a buen término, dado que o bien puede resultar detenido, impedido de realización, o puede tener un carácter de detención que podríamos llamar crónico o patológico, presente en algunas neurosis graves, sin que por ello resulte en un duelo imposible, como podríamos adscribir a la melancolía. Situamos entonces tres modos en los que el duelo puede presentarse: Impedido, Patológico o Imposible.
