Mundialmente encontramos un gran número de mutilados como consecuencia del Cáncer de Cabeza y Cuello (CCP), que representa uno de los seis tumores malignos más prevalentes. El impacto de la CCP puede afectar a más aspectos que conforman la calidad de vida que en otros tipos de cáncer, debido a las características mutilantes y cambios funcionales de los tratamientos. Estas características se asocian con una disminución de la autoestima de los pacientes, mediante la desactivación de las funciones vitales de comer, tragar y hablar. Los pacientes también tienen un alto potencial de alteración de la imagen corporal debido a la ubicación muy visible de la enfermedad y la desfiguración significativa causada por el tratamiento. Así, entre las técnicas de rehabilitación, encontramos la rehabilitación protésica que tendrá como objetivo sustituir a la zona afectada por el cáncer, con el fin de recuperar la funcionalidad y la estética. El uso de esta tecnología es nueva, así como estudios de la zona, estos se producen en su mayoría por profesionales de la odontología, medicina, lo que apunta a la necesidad de una mayor investigación por la psicología para determinar cuáles son los aspectos subjetivos que se modifican en este tipo de tratamiento. Palabras clave Psicología, Cabeza y Cuello Cáncer de rehabilitación protésica ABSTRACT PROSTHETIC REHABILITATION IN PATIENTS WITH HEAD AND NECK CANCER UNDER THE LOOK OF PSYCHOLOGY We globally found a huge number of mutilated people due to Cancer of Head and Neck (CCP), which represents the six malignant tumors larger prevalence. The CCP affect more the aspects that compose the life quality than in other cancer types, due to the characteristics mutelatings of the treatments. Such characteristics associate to the decrease of the patients self-esteem, for disabling the vital functions of eating, to swallow and to speak. The patients with CCP also have highly a high potential of disturbance of the corporal image due to the location visible of the disease and of the significant distortion caused by the treatment.This way, among the techniques of rehabilitation of that profile of patients, we found the prosthetic rehabilitation that will have for objective to substitute the committed area for the cancer, in the intention of recovering the functionality and the aesthetics. The use of that technology is recent, as well as the studies en the area, being those, in his/her majority, produced by professionals of the dentistry, medicine, phonoaudiology, what appears for a need of new invstigations on the part of the psychology to discover which the subjective aspects are modified in that treatment.
