Homofobia é o conceito utilizado para designar medo, aversão, desprezo, ódio às pessoas identificadas como homossexuais.A palavra “homo” também significa homem e nesse caso o conceito de homofobia traria a ideia de medo do igual, e consequentemente, de si mesmo: homofobia é o medo do outro em si mesmo. Sendo algo que está em si mesmo e é visto a partir da figura do outro, pode-se falar em uma projeção, que se dá quando um conteúdo inconsciente de um indivíduo ou de um grupo se apresenta a ele como pertencente a outro objeto, indivíduo ou grupo. Este conteúdo se encontra na sombra, que se refere àquela parte da personalidade que foi reprimida em benefício do ego ideal. Uma vez que todas as coisas inconscientes são projetadas, encontramos a sombra na projeção - na nossa visão do ‘outro’. Existem diversos fatores psicológicos que se escondem na sombra do sujeito. Nisso, recaem medos e inseguranças que os indivíduos não estão preparados para lidar, pois o Outro, visto como um não-eu, pode ser considerado uma ameaça, devido às fortes contradições internas desse Eu e então ocorre a projeção, com a mesma intensidade agressiva com se rejeita tais fatores internos a si próprio.
