El objetivo de este artículo fue focalizar y enumerar algunas puntualizaciones acerca del rol del psicólogo y sus intervenciones en el trabajo con familias de personas mayores institucionalizadas en residencias de larga estadía. Esto conlleva una serie de desafíos que emergen tanto de la tarea como de alinearse con la Convención Interamericana sobre la Protección de los Derechos Humanos de las Personas Mayores y el Modelo de Atención Integral Centrado en la Persona. Tomar la decisión de institucionalizar implica tener conciencia de la necesidad de modificar la forma de cuidado, aun cuando esto venga acompañado de culpas, miedos, reproches y contradicciones. El ingreso y adaptación a una residencia de larga estadía conllevan también la revisión de las ideas acerca de ésta, la vejez y el cuidado. Por eso, identificar las creencias sobre familia que tiene el staff de la institución y las expectativas que tiene la familia para con él, se vuelve tarea esencial para construir un vínculo eficaz y seguro. Finalmente, se revisa el Modelo Tentativo del Proceso de Adaptación de los Familiares de Rosenthal y Dawson (1992) para pensar formas de abordaje diferentes según las problemáticas emergentes. Palabras clave Rol del psicólogo - Familia - Personas mayores - Residencias larga estadía ABSTRACT PSYCHOLOGIST ROLE IN WORKING WITH FAMILIES OF INSTITUTIONALIZED ELDERLY PEOPLE IN NURSING HOMES The aim of this article was to focus and list some issues about the psychologist role and the interventions in working with families of elderly people institutionalized in long-stay residences (nursing homes). This entails a series of challenges that emerge both from the task and from aligning with the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Elderly People and the Model of Person Centred Care. Making the decision to institutionalize implies being aware of the need to modify the form of care, even when this is accompanied by guilt, fear, reproach and contradictions. The admission and adaptation to a long-stay residence (nursing home) also entail the revision of the ideas about the residence itself, being old and care. For this reason, identifying the beliefs about the family held by the institution’s staff and the expectations that the family has towards them becomes an essential task to build an effective and safe bond. Finally, the Tentative Model of the Adaptation Process of Family Members by Rosenthal and Dawson (1992) is reviewed to think about different approaches depending on the emerging problems.
